Distinguished Service

Canadians are bombarded with news of public officials alleged to have strayed from the honest and moral path of ethical behaviour. From scandals involving members of the Senate and Parliament, big city mayors, provincial politicians, former government auditors, small town bureaucrats – the list goes on. Public trust in government at all levels has been eroded. A cynical public is tempted to paint all in government with the same brush. It is refreshing to read a recent article by Jeffrey Simpson of the Globe and Mail. He writes of two Canadians – Edmonton’s Mayor Stephen Mandel and Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney. Mandel is retiring from city politics. Carney is leaving to run the Bank of England. Jeffrey Simpson reminds his readers that in spite of the scandals it is important not to forget there are those who do serve with distinction in public office.
