Don Smeltzer, the company's
principal consultant, has been closely associated wth municipal public
sector operations for many years - as an adult educator, chief administrative officer,
management consultant, city alderman, author and community activist. He was
Director of the Maritime Municipal Training and Development Board (MMTDB)
throughout the life of this internationally recognized organization and played a
pivotal role in improving the state of management and policy operations in local
government throughout Atlantic Canada and elsewhere. Many who are employed today in senior public
sector positions received their first career opportunity through internships and
other programs pioneered by the MMTDB during the 25 years it operated out of
Dalhousie University.
Throughout the 1990's Don Smeltzer was a leading advocate for use of the Internet as a decision making resource, a communication and educational medium, and as a vehicle for making government operations more transparent. He is responsible for initiating the early development of many municipal government web sites in the Maritime Provinces.
Don Smeltzer served as an Alderman for the former City of Dartmouth prior to the introduction of regional government in Nova Scotia. He was the first candidate for municipal office in Atlantic Canada to use a web site for council elections and for follow-up contact with his constituency. In 1998 he was named recipient of the Bruce H. Yoe Memorial Award by the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities in recognition of outstanding contribution to municipal government. He remains the only non-PEI resident to receive this award. Additionally, he has been recognized by both the Nova Scotia and New Brunwick Associations of Municipal Administrators and by the Council of Maritime Premiers for improving the quality of municipal government operations.
