A side of Don Smeltzer not many of his public sector colleagues know is his long-standing involvement in stage, radio and television. This interest evolved at the start of his teenage years at which time he began performing in community theatre, television commercials, voice overs and later radio drama and film. Don was a regular on the “The Gillans,” – a dramatic series for CBC’s Radio Maritime Farm Broadcast.
The journey took him to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for acting; then to Vancouver and Winnipeg. Eventually returning to Halifax, Don completed graduate studies at Dalhousie University where he was employed as an educator and agency director for 26 years. Throughout, he remained (and continues to be) active in the performing arts with film, video and commercial engagements. He is a former President of ACTRA’s Maritime Branch.
Recent engagements as an actor include voice over for an Oak Island promotional video and background performer on the sets of Haven, Relative Happiness, Bag of Bones, Call Me Fitz, Seed, Big Driver, Mr. D. and The Healer. Previous engagements for commercials include: Blue Cross, Atlantic Canada Plus and Labatt Breweries.
Don is Executive Producer for several KoKreative productions.
The totality of life experiences, perceptions and memories, including a long-standing interest/involvement in the metaphysical, provide a depth of emotion to draw upon as an actor. As a performer, Don is available for speaking and acting engagements.
